South Korean agriculture officials said on the 24th that due to the re-emergence of avian influenza virus, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, government departments urgently killed 201,000 poultry.

An official from South Korea ’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said on the same day that H5N6 avian influenza virus was detected in four duck farms in the southwest. One of them is located in Jeongeup, about 260 kilometers south of Seoul. The other is located in Gochang, about 300 kilometers southwest of Seoul. The other two are located in Yeongam, 380 kilometers south of Seoul.

The official said that from November 19 to December 24, quarantine personnel had killed a total of 201,000 ducks at the four duck farms mentioned above.

After the bird flu epidemic was found again in South Korea last month, many people worry that the epidemic will spread across the country. In order to prevent the epidemic from spreading, Jin Ying, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Aquatic Food, issued a ban requiring major markets to stop selling young chicks under 14 weeks of age.

In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has set up 16 inspection teams to supervise and inspect the implementation of the ban. At the same time, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries also requested more than 300 poultry trading points across the country to increase the number of closures and disinfections.

In November last year, South Korea was hit by avian flu, killing more than 32 million poultry, accounting for nearly one-fifth of the country's total poultry. Since most of them are hens capable of laying eggs, the number of laying hens has dropped sharply.

During the Spring Festival this year, South Korea was caught in an "egg shortage", and the eggs turned into "golden eggs" for a time, and the prices soared. South Korea subsequently imported eggs from the United States, Spain, Australia and New Zealand, stabilizing prices to some extent. However, due to outbreaks in the United States and Spain, South Korea subsequently decided to suspend the import of eggs from these countries. (Zhang Jing)
